Proxmox consulting for your infrastructure

Migrations, clusters, storage and backups must be designed around the services that need to keep running. Proxmox consulting starts with the existing architecture and constraints to define a plan for changes and validation.

When to review a Proxmox environment

For businesses and IT teams considering Proxmox VE or reviewing an existing installation, with a focus on dependencies, capacity and the ability to recover services.

  • Migration of virtual machines to a Proxmox environment that needs sizing and validation.
  • Clusters or storage that need to be reviewed in relation to workloads, networks and potential points of failure.
  • Existing backups without a documented or tested recovery process.

Migrations, clusters, storage and backups

The approach is built around the actual environment. Technical analysis precedes changes and helps select the sequence, tools and checks appropriate to the project.

  • Inventory of hosts, virtual machines, networks, storage and service dependencies.
  • Review of the virtualisation architecture and cluster and storage requirements.
  • A migration plan with a sequence of activities, maintenance windows and recovery options.
  • Backup review and recovery tests for the agreed systems and data.

Information and constraints to establish first

Before work begins, we need versions, configurations, available capacity and network details, along with licensing requirements and other constraints affecting the systems to be migrated. We also agree on recovery objectives and who will validate the results.

  • Authorised access to the hypervisors, storage and backup systems included in the project.
  • Space and resources for testing, with suitable data copies and recovery procedures.
  • Maintenance windows and criteria the application team will use to confirm that services work.

Continuity and recovery depend on the design

High availability requires a coherent architecture of hosts, networks, storage and quorum. A cluster alone does not guarantee it.

  • No promise of a migration without interruptions: possible downtime is assessed for each service.
  • Snapshots and replication do not automatically replace backups and restore tests.
  • Hardware, licences, ongoing support and application work are not automatically included in the engagement.

A verifiable plan for your infrastructure

Deliverables and acceptance criteria are agreed before work begins. Validation covers the hosted services as well as the startup of the virtual machines.

  • A summary of the architecture reviewed and the agreed decisions, including dependencies and limitations.
  • A plan for changes, their sequence and recovery procedures.
  • Results of the migration or recovery tests included in the engagement and documentation for the team.

Storage and backups: two useful articles

The articles on TrueNAS with Proxmox VE and on Proxmox Backup Server help you prepare a discussion about storage and data protection. These technical articles, written in Italian, explain design choices and operational limits.

Frequently asked questions

A useful engagement starts with a clear scope from the first discussion.

Can the migration happen without interruptions?

That cannot be promised before analysing services and dependencies. The plan must state which operations require downtime, the agreed maintenance windows and recovery options.

Are a cluster and snapshots enough to protect services?

Availability and recovery must be assessed separately. A cluster also depends on networks, storage and quorum; snapshots and replication do not automatically replace backups and restore tests.

Describe your Proxmox project

Describe your environment, goals and operational constraints. The area of interest is preselected for this service; you can change it in the menu. Marvin is your point of contact. Scope, responsibilities and how the work will be delivered are agreed before the engagement begins.
